legend of korra is plot driven — not character driven.
this affects how its characters are written, how they react to things (how they don’t react to things).
it causes a loss of small hard details like rock candy that are the true foundations of stories and fictional worlds.
it’s a huge loss that there is no “power of stuff" in Legend of Korra — unlike avatar the last airbender.
i feel like i don’t know any small, concrete details about korra or her life. what are her daily habits? how does she process bad things happening? what’s her refuge in a bad day?
how does mako and bolin fit into the daily grind of her life? how does asami?
what are the moments that really bind these people together? i mean really bind them together? what are their moments in amber strung along like beads on a string?
without these, we’ll never have relationships as strong and complicated as the first team avatar or even like the ones shaped by mai, ty lee, and azula.
the LoK characters have no nuance, no details, no complexity. they are strips of cardboard acting out the moves necessary to inch the plot forward — which, inevitably, is in and of itself flimsy, because it has no support from the driving motivations and needs of its characters.
I seem to recall having heard once that well-developed characters can carry a flimsy plot, but that not even a well-developed plot can carry flimsy characters.
